Car tax exemptions

Most vehicles in the UK are subject to road tax including almost all vehicles owned for private use.  However, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency recognises that certain kinds of vehicles are exempt from tax – these are:

  • Vehicles used by disabled persons, including mobility scooters

  • Historic vehicles

  • Electric vehicles

  • Moving machines

  • Vehicles powered by steam

  • Vehicles used for agriculture, horticulture and forestry

If you feel that your vehicle should be exempt from tax, you will need to contact the DVLA in order to get a tax exemption certificate.  If you use a vehicle without a valid tax or tax exemption certificate, you are breaking the law and may be subject to a fine.
